Kumihimu Tutorial

Kumihimu Braiding
Tools  required
 kumihimu disc          8 bobbins          E 6000 glue
End caps                  Clasp               Rat tail cord number 2mm

Beginning Kumihimu
This is  a basic round braid which is easy and very satisfying to make, I began this at Best Bead show in Tucson and became quite enamoured with the possibilities.

Start by using the thicker rat tail satin it braids quickly and you can see your design as it progresses.
I cut my cords into 54 inch pieces this way I can make a long neck piece plus a bracelet.the rule of thumb for length is 3 to 1 . So figure the finnished lenth of your piece and multiply by 3 . eg 18 inch necklace = 54 inches.
Next take your rat tail and do a over hand knot in 1 end then take each cord and wind it onto a bobbin, close the bobbin by bending the dome back over the wrapped cord.
Ok now the fun part slip the knot in the hole and prepare your disc by slipping a cord into the numbers beside the black dots. These are the starting positions.

Kumi step 1

Take the cord in number 1 spot and move it directly across disc to number 15 .

then take cord in number 17 and move to to 31.

Then turn disc 1 quarter turn to the right.
The numbers 24 and 25 should be at the top..
move the cord in slot 25 to 7. Move cord from 9 to 23 turn disc a quarter tourn to the right .
Numbers 15 and 16 should be on top
The top right cord always comes towards you, bottom left cord always moves straight away from you then quarter turn to the right.
